On 5th June 2026, World Environment Day was celebrated through various awareness and educational activities.
A tree plantation programme was organised at the Zoological Garden, Alipore, under the theme “Ekti Gaach Mayer Name (एक पेड़ माँ के नाम)”, where students planted saplings in honour of their mothers, promoting a sense of responsibility towards nature. The trees planted are:
🌱Baobab
🌱Ashok
🌱Mohul
🌱Amlaki
🌱Kanchan
🌱Neem
🌱Bokul
🌱Mehogani
A total of 68 students from the Kolkata Police Nabadisha Wing and 11 students from Jyangra Adarsha Vidyalaya took part in the programme. The event began with a presentation on environmental conservation, zoo management, and the campaign theme, along with showcasing of wildlife videos.
Post-presentation, a quiz competition was conducted, followed by keepers’ talks from different animal enclosures, who explained their experiences in animal behaviour and care to the student participants. An awareness walk was also organised within the zoo premises.
The participants enjoyed a guided zoo tour, and a themed selfie stand was set up to encourage public engagement. The programme witnessed active participation from zoo staff, students, teachers, and visitors.
The initiative aimed to raise awareness among young minds and inspire them to actively contribute to environmental conservation.
